Financial Assistance for Seniors

Since December, 2006

There are some very exciting opportunities coming up to help out Seniors in Columbia County.

Medical Care for your pet
Do you need help with some of the routine medical expenses for your dog or cat? Thanks to a generous donation from the Lura Freeman estate, we are able to help offset the costs of routine exams, vaccinations, spay/neuters and other general veterinary care for your beloved pets.

We have teamed up with five local vets (Columbia Veterinary Clinic, Midway Veterinary Hospital, Scappoose Animal Hospital, St. Helens Veterinary Clinic, and Valley Veterinary Clinic) to provide this service. Anyone over 55 can request assistance with payment for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and possibly other requested services for their pets by calling the shelter at 503-397-4353. A certificate will be issued detailing the assistance to be provided and this will be presented to the participating vet for all or part of the fee for service.

Spay/neuter surgeries will be covered, as will vaccinations. Other requested procedures may be covered or subsidized. For each senior requesting assistance there will be a maximum benefit of $100.

Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction

November 10, 2007

Columbia Humane Society’s silent auction and benefit dinner was held on November 10, 2007 at the St. Helens Elks Lodge. Over the course of the evening, guests enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner, the excitement at our gaming tables, karaoke, and of course all the fantastic items in our silent auction.

Thanks to our generous sponsors and guests, we netted over $8,000! Without the generous support of our community, we could not have realized this great success. It was a wonderful time, but the best part of the evening was the knowledge that the funds raised will make a difference for the shelter animals in our care, and will allow us to continue to service our community members, both two-legged and four.

Special THANKS to our Sponsor:

‘Yappy Hour’ and Dog Wash

Monthly, every third Friday, 5 to 8 pm, from June – October, 2007

‘YAPPY HOUR’ is a HIT...

October 12th was our howl-o-ween party and final  ‘Yappy Hour’ of 2007. Pet lovers brought their furry friends in costume to Wayne's Chicago Red Hots! Prizes were awarded to scariest, cutest, best in show, and best human pooch combo.

Previous ‘Yappy Hours’ have been a great success! Plenty of dogs got baths, folks had fun socializing in the sun and we were able to raise some desperately needed funds. Customers enjoyed a beautiful evening on the Scappoose Bay Marina socializing with their dogs. We even adopted out one of our puppies at the event, and his brother got adopted the next day!

Here's a story Christy Caballero of the Longview Daily News wrote about ‘YAPPY HOUR’: [read story...]

A big THANK YOU to Wayne’s for hosting this great event. Check them out at:

SPAY DAY USA

February 27, 2007

SPAY DAY USA is an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to save the lives of our pets and improve our communities through the awesome power of spay/neuter! Spay/neuter saves lives and money by reducing the number of homeless animals. Spay/neuter is good for you, your pet, and your community. This year, Spay Day USA was February 27, 2007.

During Spay Day USA, hundreds of veterinarians, humane organizations, and concerned individuals nationwide partner to promote and provide spay/neuter services. Since the first Spay Day USA in 1995, caring people just like you have helped spay or neuter an estimated 1,366,000 cats, dogs, and other animals in honor of the program, saving potentially millions of animal lives and tax dollars.

Support the Columbia Humane Society By 'Sponsoring A Snip'.

Columbia Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill organization that relies solely on donations to keep open our doors. This includes funding the spay/neuter of animals that we adopt out of our shelter into new homes. We are asking the members of our community to rally together to help celebrate Spay Day USA 2007 by simply sponsoring the spay or neuter of at least one of our shelter animals awaiting adoption during the month of February. Then, enter the 'EVERY SPAY/NEUTER COUNTS!' CONTEST for a chance to win a fabulous prize! Please call the shelter at (503) 397-4353 or visit at 2084 Oregon Street in St. Helens, Oregon for more information or to sponsor one of our animals!

We Can't Do It Without You!   Please Sponsor-A-Snip Today!

Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction

December 2, 2006

Thank you to all of you who donated to and participated in the Columbia Humane Society’s silent auction and benefit dinner, held on December 2 at the St. Helens Elks Lodge.

Guests enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner, the comedy hypnosis of Scott Kealoha, and of course all the fantastic items in our silent auction. The silent auction featured items to suit every taste, and was the scene of much active bidding.

Thanks to our guests and donors, we netted over $4,600! Without this generous support, we could not have realized this great success. Everyone had a wonderful time, but the best part of the evening was the knowledge that the funds raised will make a difference for the shelter animals in our care, and will allow us to continue to service our community members, both two-legged and four.

We are planning to hold this silent auction again next year and will try to increase the number of donated items and money raised for the Columbia Humane Society. We hope that we can count on your support for our next event.

Happy holidays!

CHS / Burgerville Partnership

February 26, 2006

February is Columbia Humane Society / Burgerville Partnership Month.

On Sunday February 26th from 12-3, the Columbia Humane Society and St. Helens Burgerville co-sponsored their annual Partnership Day. Columbia Humane Society staff and volunteers were on-hand to help serve meals and discuss the shelter and its works in the community.

CHS raised over $400.00 through canister donations, Spay & Neuter ribbon magnet sales, as well as 10% of all Burgerville proceeds from the sale of food and gift cards during this period.

Also throughout the month of February, any gift cards purchased at the St. Helens Burgerville can also be designated for CHS. Just let the checker know that you want your gift card purchase to support the Humane Society Partnership. We will also have our donation cannisters, pictures of adoptable animals and our display board at the restaurant all month.

No, CHS has not been in business for 100 years, but we did hit an important mile post in the last two months. We adopted over 100 dogs and cats! At last count, we were up to 104 during our "Home 4 the Holidays" campaign. This started on November 8 and ran until December 31, as part of a world–wide effort to place animals in new homes. We offered special discounts and held an exciting Adopt–A–Thon early in December. This was a great success and we hope to participate again next year.

Adopt–A–Thon

December 4 – 5, 2004

CHS held an Adopt–A–Thon as part of "Home 4 the Holidays" on December 4 and 5 in the Hi–School Pharmacy parking lot. During the two days, we adopted out 23 animals. We also sold dog and cat related material such as food, jewelry, and Christmas cards. A Portland band, The Ditty Twisters, came out to entertain on Saturday, the 4th, and both days volunteer Jeremy Porter played Blitzen, board members Paul Dinu and Chuck Petersen took turns playing Santa Claus, Wayne's Chicago Red Hots brought their van and sold food, Sunshine Pizza and Dominoes Pizza donated pizza to the workers, several businesses and individuals donated to the baskets we raffled and Hudson Garbage provided that very necessary Port–a–Potty. It was cold, but everyone had a good time and it was especially good to see so many animals leave with their new owners.

Special thanks to Cari'ssa Karol–Chik, who arranged this whole campaign. She obtained lots of donations of material time and pulled it all together.
