Dog Washing Service Now Available

Every Saturday, 11:00am–4:00pm

Columbia Humane Society is helping clean up the town four paws at a time! To raise funds for the shelter we are hosting weekly dog washes in the shelter’s bathing area and at All About Pets. This has been such a hit that we are now asking people to call ahead of time to schedule an appointment.

For a minimum donation of $5 per short-haired dog and $10 per long-haired dog your best friend can get in on the fun. Nail trimming is available for an additional $3.

We schedule appointments for 11:00am–4:00pm every Saturday.

If the interest continues we plan to add another wash day to our current weekly schedule. Your pet will receive tender loving care while in our capable and caring hands. We have a variety of shampoos to offer for pampering your dog. Instead of breaking your back, or your bank, call to schedule a time for your dog’s bath.

Thank you! Your donations help keep the shelter doors open to provide a roof over the heads of many homeless animals until they find forever homes.

Call and make your appointment today! Call the shelter at 503-397-4353 between 11am and 5pm Tuesday–Saturday or All About Pets at 503-543-5740.

We are also asking for dedicated volunteers to help with our weekly dog washes. An hour or few can make a difference, so come and help us raise money to benefit the shelter animals! Contact us at 503-397-4353.

Feral Cat Clinics

throughout February, 2010

The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (FCCO) held a "Beat the Heat" special in honor of Spay Day, which was February 23, 2010. To help cats before they get pregnant, they celebrated Spay Day throughout the month of February by spaying/neutering all qualified feral cats for only $15 at Portland clinics. Read their Caregiver Information to find out if a cat is qualified and to make an appointment.

SPAY DAY

February 23, 2010

SPAY DAY is an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to save the lives of our pets and improve our communities through the awesome power of spay/neuter!

Every year 3-4 MILLION animals are put down in shelters across the nation. The reason for this is simple and sad. There are too many animals and not enough good homes for them. Spaying and neutering is part of our continued effort to not only see that every unwanted dog and cat has a home all their own, but to also ultimately reduce the unwanted animal population in our community. In an effort to attain these lofty goals, CHS is honored to participate in SPAY DAY USA, an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to save the lives of our pets and improve our communities through the simple power of spay/neuter!

Spay/neuter saves lives and money by reducing the number of homeless animals. Spay/neuter is good for you, your pet, and your community. Spay Day takes place the last Tuesday of February. This year, Spay Day is Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

We are asking for help in our spay and neuter commitment by giving in honor of this cause. In 2010 you can do this in three different ways:

  1. You can contribute directly to fund the spay and neuter of an animal that comes through the shelter that is to be adopted
  2. Contribute to our new SNAP program; the Columbia County Spay/Neuter Assistance Program, which offers low income residents of Columbia County a discounted fee on spay/neuter with participating local vets.
  3. Shopping at Columbia Humane Society between February 22–27. 15% of all the lobby sales will go towards the SNAP Program.

You can contriube either in person, on-line or by mail. Please indicate whether your contribution is to the Humane Society General Spay/Neuter fund or the SNAP fund.

We Can’t Do It Without You!

Here is some helpful information about low-cost spay/neuter resources:

REASONS TO SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET

  • Every day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S.
Every day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born.
At that rate there will never be enough homes for all the animals.
  • Neutering pets makes them less likely to roam, run away, or
    get into fights.
  • Spaying your female pet before she becomes sexually mature greatly reduces her chances of getting breast cancer and eliminates the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer. Neutering your male pet prevents prostate enlargement as well as prostate and testicular tumors.
  • Neutered cats are less likely to spray strong urine to mark their territory.

Home 4 the Holidays 2009

ends December 31, 2009

Columbia Humane Society has joined the 2009 Iams Home 4 the Holidays campaign to find homes for the homeless dogs and cats living in our shelter. We have beautiful, amazing animals waiting for families to love them. If you have a big heart and believe in second chances, stop by the shelter and check out our animals. Homeless animals appreciate every morsel of food, every soft blanket, every toy, and every gesture of love. There is an acknowledged bond between humans and the creatures who love them; the expression of that bond may be greatest among those offering forever homes to shelter animals.

Home 4 the Holidays Adoption Special
All adoption fees are 25% off the regular prices.
This offer ends 12/31/09.

Come and find your new best buddy at Columbia Humane Society!

Kittens, Kittens, Kittens!

On-going

      Kittens, Kittens, Kittens!

Columbia Humane Society has been overwhelmed with all the kittens that have been relinquished to the shelter recently. If you are looking for a tiny kitten or a little bigger kitten, or know someone who is, please come and visit our shelter. We have kittens of many ages, breeds, and personalities to choose from, you’re sure to find a kitty that is just what you were looking for. Many of them are grown to be almost full size cats while waiting to be adopted. Please, don’t disregard the kittens that are older just because they are not tiny any more, they are still such cute balls of fun and are extremely playful. They love their toys and are easily adjusted to get along with other pets at your home. And they also love to snuggle!

Please don’t shop for an animal when there are so many wonderful animals to be adopted. Adopting also tends to cost less, and is really a good deal when you consider that the animal is up to date with shots and spayed/neutered, and an office visit/check-up is included. Not only that, your animal’s adoption fee also helps to house, feed, and care for other animals that come to the shelter. So when you adopt, you are not only helping the animal that you adopt, but many others too, and that’s got to make you feel good!

[top of page]

Kitties Out And About

ends December 31, 2009

In an effort to find homes for our shelter cats and the many kittens presently in foster care, we have reached out to retailers near and far. All About Pets in Scappoose and Columbia Electric Feed and Seed in St. Helens regularly house kittens currently available for adoption. Please stop in and see them! Urban Fauna at Park and Everett in Portland also has been housing some of our cats and kittens.

We are showing kittens many weekend afternoons at All About Pets, Urban Fauna, and Western Pet Supply in Beaverton. Tell your family and friends in Portland and Beaverton!

As part of the Home 4 the Holidays 2009 campaign, our goal is to find forever homes for as many shelter animals as possible. Taking the kitties to other locations where more people can see them greatly improves their chances for adoption.

We are in urgent need of people to help with these showings. If you enjoy interacting with the animal-loving public and wish to help our kitties find homes, please contact the shelter at 503-397-4353. Thanks!

CHS Garage/Rummage Sale

September 25 – 27, 2009

The 9th Annual CHS Garage/Rummage Sale will last three days!!!

With just about everything under the sun, our sale has items for any pocket book. From sporting goods and furniture to electronics and DVDs!
All proceeds go to Columbia Humane Society, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter.

Friday       9am to 5pm
Saturday   9am to 5pm
Sunday   10am to 3pm
(No early birds, please!)

50925 SW Old Portland Road
Scappoose, OR
(across from Fairview Cemetery)

Start cleaning those closets and clearing out those carports and garages of unwanted items and donate to your local animal shelter.

We are now accepting donations. We are only accepting clothes and shoes for children 24 months and under this time, so no adult clothes or shoes please! Also, we are not accepting electronic equipment (TVs, VCRs, computer monitors, etc.). Thank you for your understanding.

Each year we receive a lot of great items for our garage sale but we also spend a lot of time sorting through items that can not be sold. So please make sure there are no broken toys, kitchen/household appliances, and no badly stained clothing or linens.

Columbia Self Storage has provided us with half-off a three-month rental so we have adequate storage available. They have also agreed to accept donations towards the cost of our unit so if you can contribute please drop in at the Columbia Self Storage office. It would be awesome to have no storage bill at the end of the sale!!

Thank you for your support!
We’re feeling the bite of inflation and it is vital to our shelter that we raise a large sum of money at this fundraiser to keep our shelter open.
